How to choose the correct lens type for your protective glasses

Understanding the tints used on a lens is one of the most critical factors in deciding which is the most appropriate for your application.

Below is a list of criteria to assist in determining the best lens for the environment in which you work in. We supply an extensive selection of safety glasses including the 3M range.

Lens Tint Selection

Amber Lenses

  • Filter blue and purple light
  • Provides contrast enhancement
    • Applications:
      • Shooting
      • Working in hazy or overcast conditions
      • Fine detailed work

Orange Lens

  • Filters blue and green light
  • Protects against UV (A,B,C), blue light
  • Provides contrast enhancement
    • Applications:
      • Ultraviolet Curing
      • Fine detail work

Bronze/Brown Lens

  • Reduces sun-glare
  • Protects against UV (A,B,C), blue light
  • Provides limited enhancement to visual contrast
    • Applications
      • Working outdoors

Grey Lens

  • Reduces sun-glare
  • Protects against UV (A,B,C) glare
  •  Less colour distortion than bronze/brown lenses
    • Working outdoors

Filter Shades (Green Lens)

  • Reduces ultraviolet, visible and infrared light
  • Protects against UV (A,B,C) visible light, IR
  • Provides limited enhancement to visual contrast
    • Applications:
      • Welding
      • Cutting
      • Torch brazing and soldering

Indoor/Outdoor Lens

  • Clear lens with a slight mirror coating
  • Protects against UV (A,B,C), sun-glare
  • Not as dark as grey or bronze tints
    • Workers passing quickly between indoors and outdoors e.g. forklift truck drivers

Clear Lens

  • Protects against UV (A,B,C) protection
  • No significant reduction to the amount of visible light reaching the eye
    • Working indoors or in dim lighting conditions
