What's the difference between the Research Plus and Eppendorf Reference 2?
Pipettes are probably found in every lab across the world. Eppendorf can be considered the leading global manufacturers of premium pipettes which are packed full of features making them not only highly accurate but also incredibly ergonomic and easy to use. Eppendorf provide a large range of different pipettes and other liquid handling products, including manual pipettes, electronic pipettes, stepping/repeating pipettes and more. Many of the pipette ranges are available as a separate IVD 98/79 EC certified version. If your work involves medical, clinical or diagnostic applications, an IVD compliant product should be used. If you are just conducting more research-orientated work, a general lab product (GLP) version is suitable. There are two models of manual pipettes available called the Research Plus and the Reference 2 and here we describe the key features of both: Research Plus An ultra lightweight pipette with low pipetting force for ultimate ergonomics
  • One of the most commonly used pipettes in the world
  • Air cushioned pipette for aqueous solutions
  • Available in fixed and variable volumes, in a single channel and multichannel format (8, 12, 16 or 24 channels, variable volumes only)
  • Dispensing range of 0.1 µL and 10 mL
  • Two button operation. One on top for aspirating/dispensing and a button on the side for tip ejection
  • 4 digit volume display on the side of the pipette
  • Spring loaded tip cone on pipettes up to 1000 µL (the spring limits the force of tip application aiding ejection irrespective of the application force)
  • SOFTeject in multichannel pipettes means tips are ejected in succession - reduces ejection force by 50%
  • Excellent ergonomics featuring the physiocare* concept. This pipette is also the lightest in the Eppendorf range
  • Fully autoclavable without the need for disassembly

Reference 2  Superior reliability and robustness
  • More popular in Europe than in the UK, it won a German design award in 2017
  • Air cushioned pipette for aqueous solutions
  • Available in fixed and variable volumes, in a single channel and multichannel format (8 or 12 channels, variable volumes only)
  • Dispensing range of 0.1 µL and 10 mL
  • One button operation, the same button is used for aspirating/dispensing and tip ejection. This can reduce repetitive strain on the thumb compared with having to move to a separate ejector button, especially when using a large quantity of tips
  • 4 digit volume display on the top of the pipette with magnifying glass, meaning that the display is clearly visible at every angle
  • Spring loaded tip cone on pipettes up to 1000 µL (spring limits the force of tip application aiding ejection irrespective of the application force) which can be optionally turned off
  • Excellent ergonomics - physiocare* concept
  • Highly robust - the handle is sturdy and manufactured with stainless steel, to protect the pipette from any impact
  • Fully autoclavable without need for disassembly
* PhysioCare concept provides a comprehensive approach for the user. Starting with an ergonomic design of the product itself (e.g. smooth shape, low weight, low needed forces, intuitive user interface,…), fitting into an ergonomic work space, and finally supporting an optimal workflow within the lab.
