Syringe filters – which one do I need?

Syringe filters are used to help filter samples containing solid particles, into sample tubes for analysis. These work by using a membrane with a particular pore size to catch any solids within the samples. The Camlab choice coloured filters are available with two different pore sizes, and in three different membrane sizes. Some of these filters come with pre-filters to catch any large particles to prevent blockage of the main filter membrane.

Cellulose acetate (CA) syringe filters

The Camlab Choice cellulose acetate filters are produced with modified cellulose acetate membranes and are naturally hydrophilic. This means the filters have a high filtration efficiency and present a weak fixation on proteins. CA filters are recommended for:

  • Biological samples – filtration of proteins or enzymes cultures
  • Aqueous samples
  • Cells

Nylon (NYL) filters

The Camlab Choice nylon (NYL) filters are naturally hydrophilic and are made from a nylon membrane. These filters are mainly used for aqueous solutions as they have a strong chemical resistance to alkaline samples. This means they can be used for alkaline or organic filtration of HPLC samples.

Glass microfibre (FV) syringe filters

The Camlab Choice glass microfibre filters are made from glass microfibre filter. These filters are hydrophilic and are used for viscous solutions or for filtration of cells media before sterilisation. This filter has a high resistance to organic solvents and acids (apart from HF). It is better to operate a pre-filtration using a glass microfibre syringe filter. Other recommended uses are:

  • Biological samples
  • Aqueous samples
  • Filtration of proteins or enzymes

These filters are clear and have a chemical compatibility of pH 3-7. There are not any sterile pack for these filters. The FV filters have a pore size of 1-2µm and are available in three sizes – 13, 25, 33mm

Polyether sulfone (PES) filters

The Camlab Choice polyether sulfone filters have an asymmetrical pore structure which provides an excellent loading capacity and high flow rate. This filter is naturally hydrophilic and has a good resistance to chemical solutions. PES filters are recommended for:

  • Biological samples
  • Preparation of protein samples
  • Ultra-fast filtration of tissue culture media

Camlab Choice PES filters are purple with a chemical compatibility of pH 4-8. These filters come in sterile and non-sterile packs. These filters are available in two pore sizes – 0.22 and 0.45µm, and are available in three different syringe filter sizes – 13, 25 and 33mm
