Many tasks in the lab rely on accurate liquid volume measurement using a micropipette.
To keep the pipette accurate it should be stored properly - we've taken a look at how pipettes should be stored, and why.
[caption id="attachment_11217" align="aligncenter" width="201"] Micropipettes are used in most labs - store them carefully to keep them accurate[/caption]
How to store micropipettes in the lab
When they are not in use, pipettes should always be stored;- Upright
- Set to the highest volume setting
- Away from heat and moisture
- With pipette tips removed
Why store pipettes upright, at max volume and without tips?
Storing pipettes upright;- Avoids any liquid still present from running up into the inner workings (which can cause corrosion)
- Avoids piston lubricant inside the pipette barrel from accumulating on one side only.
- Prevent accidentally using the same tip again, causing cross contamination (pipette tips are always one use only for this reason)
- Removes the risk of liquid being trapped in the tip which could evaporate up into the inner workings of the pipette
