How do I calibrate my Myron Ultrameter 6PIIfce?

The Ultrameter II 6PIIfce from Myron L is a versatile, fully waterproof multi-parameter meter, which can measure the following parameters: conductivity, TDS, resistivity, pH, ORP, free chlorine and temperature. The ultrameter has many applications including pool monitoring and measuring the conductivity of ultrapure water.

All measurement meters will generally require re-calibration and this functions to ensure the meter still reads accurately to specification and to adjust for any changes in the meter/sensors that may cause a drift in the results. Calibration uses solutions with standardised values for a particular measurement parameter called chemical standards. The calibration result is saved in the instrument and this is why it is important to use good quality calibrants (if the standard values stated were incorrect this would mean your instrument now reads off). The ultrameter has been designed in such a way that it has a very low re-calibration frequency making it simple to use and its upkeep minimal. However, to ensure the specified accuracy of results, the occasional checking/calibration against chemical standards is still required. You can follow our guidelines below for what standards to use and the recommended frequency of calibration :

pH

pH calibration on the meter is performed at either two or three points. You should calibrate with pH 7 buffer first then followed by either pH 4 and/or pH 10 buffers. The recommended frequency of calibration of pH is every 2 weeks.

ORP

ORP calibration with the ultrameter is not necessary. Due to the hazardous nature of ORP chemical standards, the ultrameter features an inbuilt electrical calibration. Frequency: Never.

Conductivity (& Resistivity and TDS)

The meter itself measures conductivity and from this reading it can calculate TDS (using a curve of results) and resistivity (the reciprocal of conductivity). There are three chemical standards that can be used and this ensures accuracy across different application types. The most appropriate depends on the composition type of your sample and the parameter you are wanting a result for. The following standards are used:

  • 442 – For use when measuring resistivity boiler and cooling water, lakes, wells etc. Recommended standard – 442-3000
  • NaCl – For use when measuring TDS of seawater or brackish water. Recommended standard – NACL-14.0
  • KCl – for use when measuring conductivity directly. Recommended standard – KCL-7000

Recommended frequency: monthly.

Free Chlorine

Free chlorine is not measured directly, rather calculated using ORP, pH and temperature measurements. Frequency – Every 2 weeks (pH).
